“Looking like a natural man is attractive” -Mr. Porter. Every respected gentleman has his own special place where he goes to relax and take care of himself. It’s not his home, and it’s not the office, but rather the “the third place.” In every neighborhood, you can find this hidden place tucked in the corner on the streets of Milan: the Barber Shop. It is an intimate artist’s studio and a private area of worship, where you can relax and rely on the skilled hands of the master barbers.
While 1940s-style haircuts and a love of the beard are often undervalued in most ordinary salons, the places we’ve chosen allow these details to take shape and come to life. Milan is boasting with stylists, travelers, musicians, and graffiti artists armed with combs and scissors, all with a shared passion for the “old-school” style.
Here’s our list of the 5 coolest barber shops in the city. Check them out, and you’ll know what we’re talking about!
Francesco Cirignotta
Viale Gabriele D’Annunzio, 25
Everything here is exceptionally sophisticated. The furniture, inspired by travel, is a crossroads between a lounge and a luxury hotel that caters to the needs of the most demanding businessman. In the back room, you can relax and treat yourself to a glass of whiskey of your choice among the wide selection of alcoholic beverages on tap.
Bullfrog
Via Dante, 4
The atmosphere here is exceptionally carefree, and you almost feel like you’re in a different city or even a different country. Everything here adheres to the theme of 1930s’ America, including the barbers. Before leaving, your haircare appointment is not complete without an exclusive shining, glazing, and lacquering of your shoes, a service you can’t find in any other shop in Italy.
Barber Shop by Atelier Luigi Ciccarelli
Via Fieno
This one chair and mirror are envied by even the most famous of celebrities. With a private appointment, you can treat yourself and spend as much time as you want to admire the haircut you’ve always wanted. One twenty minute treatment and you’ll leave looking ten years younger.
Tonsor Club Barber Shop
Via Palermo, 15
Feel welcomed into an environment carefully curated in every detail, with a vintage look from another era. Although I was a little early for my appointment for a shave, they offered me a light drink that really hit the spot while I waited. Everything here relaxes you, while jazz music plays softly in the background, and the men at work are young artists that promptly take care of their clients.
Gum Barber Shop
Corso Italia, 45
While it may feel like you’re on the set of a 1950s American movie remake, or 85 N 3rd Street in Brooklyn, we’re writing to you from Via Vetere 10, just a couple steps away from Corso di Porta Ticinese. Gum is the hair salon/barber shop that you simply must try. Check out their vintage style, black and white decor, and good beer while you wait for your hair stylist.
