The Daiquiri Recipe

The Daiquiri cocktail recipe guide: the right ingredients and how to use them to make this drink at home.

The Daiquiri is one of the world’s most iconic and popular cocktails, synonymous with freshness and simplicity. Perfect for summer days or as an aperitif, the Daiquiri harmoniously combines rum, lime and sugar. In this article, we will guide you step by step in the preparation of the perfect Daiquiri recipe, following the dictates of tradition but with an eye on possible variations to customise your drink. The Daiquiri has Cuban origins, taking its name from a beach near Santiago de Cuba. It is said to have been created in 1905 by an American engineer named Jennings Cox. The original Daiquiri recipe called for simple, locally available ingredients: white rum, lime and sugar. The cocktail gained popularity mainly thanks to people such as Ernest Hemingway, who was a great admirer of it.

Ingredients for the Daiquiri recipe:

  • 60 ml white rum
  • 20 ml fresh lime juice
  • 15 ml sugar syrup (or 2 teaspoons white sugar)
  • Ice
  • Lime for garnish (optional)

Preparation of the Daiquiri Recipe

  • Prepare the ingredients: For a perfect Daiquiri recipe, it is important to use fresh lime juice. Squeeze the lime and measure out 20 ml. You can also prepare the sugar syrup in advance by mixing equal parts sugar and water and heating until the sugar dissolves completely.
  • Shake: Pour the rum, lime juice and sugar syrup into a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until the shaker becomes cold to the touch.
  • Strain and serve: Strain the mix into a chilled cocktail glass, removing any pieces of ice or lime residue. If you prefer, you can garnish your Daiquiri with a lime slice on the rim of the glass for a decorative touch.

Daiquiri: Variant and Tips

Choose the right rum: White rum is traditionally used in the Daiquiri recipe, but experimenting with aged rums can add a more complex and richer flavour to this drink according to your personal taste. Use fresh lime to balance the acidity and sweetness. Do not use packaged lime juice! Adjust the amount of sugar according to your personal taste.
Although the classic Daiquiri recipe is unbeatable, there are many variations you can try to adapt the cocktail to your personal taste:

  • Frozen Daiquiri : For a cooler, creamier version, make a Daiquiri by blending the ingredients with crushed ice. This version is very popular on hot summer days.
  • Hemingway Daiquiri: Inspired by writer Ernest Hemingway’s favourite variant, this version replaces some of the lime juice with grapefruit juice and adds a touch of maraschino.
