After years of experience around the world at prestigious starred restaurants, Lazio chef Antonio Ziantoni has returned to his roots and launched the Zia project. For his new home, he has chosen Trastevere, the Roman quarter par excellence of good food. His cuisine, strengthened by the French technique he has acquired over the years, puts the quality of the ingredients first alongside the taste and enjoyment that a fine dining experience must offer. The result is a menu linked to seasonality that respects Italian tradition while not being anchored only to the most typical Roman dishes. GLASS HOSTARIA

Glass is a contemporary and innovative osteria that stands out on the Trastevere scene. In the kitchen is star chef Cristina Bowerman, originally from Cerignola who, after a degree in law and legal experience overseas, it was in America that she rediscovered her passion for cooking, turning it into a real job. Her aim is to give customers – Roman and international – an experience to remember by proposing a menu that represents a journey into taste that she defines as a true cultural crossroads. Even the location, with its essential but no less cosy lines, goes against the tide compared to other restaurants in the area, while retaining an informal spirit. Hard not to feel at ease.
CAMBIO

Cambio has only recently opened (in September 2019), yet its proposal has already won over many people. It is a young restaurant, conceived as a meeting place in tune with the neighbourhood in which it is located, Trastevere. The menu is linked to tradition, often enriched with a few modern touches and inspired by two fundamental principles: sustainability and flavour. At Cambio, in fact, not only the raw materials, but also the wines and oils are chosen with great care, favouring environmentally aware producers. And quality is assured, since Franco Magliocchetti – owner of the restaurant together with Chef Fabio Trovato – has been awarded the title of best oil sommelier. A corner enriched by various musical instruments reinforces the idea of warmth and conviviality that this place wants to convey: anyone can get up on stage and share a song with the public in joy.
LA RENELLA

It is impossible not to mention La Renella, the oldest bakery in Trastevere, which has been baking bread, pizza and pastries famous throughout the city since 1870. Ideal for a quick lunch break, the place is a guarantee of quality, as the queues at peak times prove. The product counter is a real feast for the eyes, but above all for the palate: in addition to pizzas and focaccias stuffed with the freshest ingredients such as mixed vegetables, squash blossoms and cured meats, you will also find a section dedicated to desserts, capable of tempting and making even the least greedy person give in. Cakes, tarts and biscuits of all kinds flood the room with their typical scent of wood-fired oven baking. There is something for everyone.
IL MERIDIONALE

Brought together by a great friendship and the greatest passion – that for the table – Roberto and Massimiliano have clear ideas: their trattoria tastes like home, it is cosy and with attention to detail inspired by the 1970s. The aim of the cuisine is to arouse emotions in those who try it, each dish must encapsulate the identity of those who conceived and prepared it. This is why there is no lack of traditional elements on the menu, made with selected raw materials, always putting taste at the centre.

The protagonist of this contemporary osteria, the brainchild of Alessandra Ruggeri, is the so-called quinto quarto (offal, historically considered the poorest cut of meat), tripe in particular. It is an ingredient suitable for experimentation, so much so that it is served fried, but also in the form of meatballs or meat sauce, giving a touch of originality to the menu in which there is no shortage of Roman cuisine highlights. With this restaurant, Alessandra has the opportunity to express her creativity, but also her different skills: she is in fact the one who cooks, welcomes guests and takes care of the wine selection. The cuisine at Enzo al 29 fully respects the Roman tradition and does so by carefully selecting km0 products from small producers with whom they share a philosophy of respect for nature and sustainability. It is a pact of loyalty that the owners of this trattoria have made with their customers, but even before that with Enzo, the previous owner who passed away in the late 1980s and from whom they took over the business. At Enzo’s you will find authentic Roman cuisine, made from simple ingredients that put the authenticity of the flavours at the centre of the dishes. And if you are satisfied with the menu, you can try to recreate it at home. In fact, the restaurant sells some of the raw materials used in the kitchen according to seasonal availability, from extra virgin olive oil from the province of Viterbo to organic San Marzano tomatoes.
