Do you want a genuine, all-Italian meal right in the center of Florence? In via del Proconsolo 3, the first fully egg-based restaurant in the city has recently opened. We are talking about nu Ovo – Lovely Eggsperience (i.e.the restaurant name literally means “an egg” in Tuscan dialect), the concept restaurant open only for lunch, inside the fabulous Grand Hotel Cavour.
Completely enveloped by the Renaissance charm of the thirteenth-century palace, inside nu Ovo – Lovely Eggsperience, you will be enchanted by the beauty of the restaurant, where the designer furnishings are elegantly arranged under the very high and incredible vaulted ceilings, entirely frescoed by Italian master artisan of the Art Nouveau Galileo Chini. Behind the counter, a phrase by the Irish writer, George Bernard Shaw greets guests, immediately understanding what the philosophy of the local is based on: “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.”
The aim here is to give value to simple things, those that too often we take for granted, those that remember us of our childhood memories, like a fried egg. That’s why the egg is central: is there perhaps a better and more genuine ingredient, that in its simplicity manages to decline itself to endless possibilities of use? And if it’s organic, local and used with the typically Italian mastery in a series of innovative recipes, the result can only be superb.
Open only for lunch, nu Ovo – Lovely Eggsperience has decided to concentrate its energies to develop a unique menu in the city that is able to satisfy the tastes of everyone, Italians and foreigners alike, both young and old. Only organic products accompany the main ingredient: homemade bread and focaccia with mother yeast and whole wheat flour, the inevitable Chianina meat, truffles and extra virgin olive oil from Tuscany.
We will have to go back several times to satisfy the whim to try everything, from the “Bocconi”, small appetizers designed to stimulate the appetite, to the first courses, up to the selection of poached or fried eggs cooked at 62 degrees, the second course “Non solo Ovo”, with incursions of Chianina meat, sandwiches and desserts “Ovo, amore e fantasia”. We couldn’t resist the “Sushi del Chianti”, the “Tomato soup with fried basil”, the carbonara “Dolce Stil NuOvo”, the poached eggs with mousse of parmesan and pesto of tarragon and the Italian reinterpretation of Croque Madame, with cooked ham, Asiago and a fried egg.
Come during the week, to switch off from the bustle of the center and find a moment of peace to devote to this enchanting location, or on Saturday and Sunday for the delicious gourmet brunch accompanied by American coffee, pancakes, bagels and tasty fried eggs. One thing we can assure you, once you have tried the “lovely eggsperience”, this will become your favorite new bistro in town!
