Al Matarel

An icon of old Milanese cooking in the heart of Brera

by 2 min read

Al Matarel in the Brera area, Milan

In Milan’s dining scene, few places embrace Milanese tradition with quite the same authenticity as Al Matarel, a historic restaurant that has stood as a bastion of Lombard cuisine since 1962. Founded by restaurateurs Elide and Marco, the venue has spanned the decades while keeping its essence intact, serving generous portions and faithful, traditional recipes.

The restaurant’s walls tell stories of a bygone era through photographs, memorabilia and the lasting marks left by patrons over the decades. Over the years, Al Matarel was frequented by artists, journalists, politicians and prominent figures, becoming a landmark in a Milan undergoing rapid economic and cultural expansion. It is especially famous for its link to Bettino Craxi, who in the ’80s hosted his famous ‘Monday lunches’ here, gatherings that left a deep mark on Italian politics at the time.

The restaurant’s culinary offering has remained unchanged over time, true to the flavours of old Milan. Oss Buss in gremolada, Cassoeula meneghina, Rustin Negàa, polenta and porcini mushrooms are just a few of the specialities reflecting Lombard culinary tradition, defined by slow cooking, plenty of butter and humble cuts of meat packed with rich flavour. Fresh pasta – such as Tortelloni ai Tre Sapori filled with braised beef, pumpkin, ricotta and spinach, Risotto alla milanese or Tagliatelle ai funghi porcini – is made fresh daily, while desserts like the Michelàc – a bread and milk cake with cocoa, raisins and pine nuts – still bear the hallmark of Signora Elide. After the passing of her husband Marco in 2015, she continued to preserve and pass down the restaurant’s philosophy, ensuring every dish honours local Milanese heritage. This dedication was recognised in 2017 by the Municipality of Milan, which awarded Al Matarel the title of ‘Bottega Storica Milanese’, an accolade celebrating businesses with over 50 years of history.

Dining at Al Matarel means immersing yourself in the flavours and atmosphere of old Milan; and for those who choose Ossobuco, the quintessential traditional dish, a gentle stroll around Milan or a glass of fine acquavite is the ideal way to round off the meal.
