Despite the incessant rain, the fourth installment of “Natale Con Gli Autori” (Christmas with the Authors) was an absolute success. The charity event is the brainchild of Stefania Nascimbeni and was executed this year under the artistic direction of Valeria Merlini.
The fascinating initiative was held in the beautiful location of the Milanese restaurant Filippo La Mantia – Oste e Cuoco, to support literacy. It raised 10,000€ for the Fondazione Francesa Rava which supports schools in Haiti, a country that was recently devastated by hurricane Matthew. In addition to this, fifty kilos of Rummo pasta and more than 250 books were raised in support for those in the Italian earthquake zone, and to Milanese centers for children in need. Even the smallest gesture of solidarity can make a huge difference.
This project was born with the intention of bringing the wonderful world of literature to those for whom it may otherwise remain inaccessible. After a welcome drink in the lounge of the restaurant on the ground floor (provided by Ferrari Spazio Bollicine, who supplied 18 magnums of sparkling wine), the 115 guests proceeded to dine on the upper floor. The organization, the atmosphere and the presentation exhibited by Roberto Rasia dal Polo, made this an exciting and unique event.
But even this was almost overshadowed by the thrill of sitting at tables with authors of some of the most interesting and compelling Italian novels. The authors mingled with guests and convivial spirits were shared by all, resulting in many laughs, toasts, and much sharing of stories. The icing on the cake was the raffle, conducted by Robert Rasia dal Polo, which even the authors themselves wanted to win!
No, unfortunately, I did not win a spot in the creative writing course taught at the seaside with Carlo A. Martigli (which also included, I might add, a one night’s stay for two at the Grand Hotel Miramare di Santa Margherita Ligure), nor did I win the online writing course with Rossella Calabrò. I crossed my fingers and my heart, whispering to myself, “Please, please, please, give me my numbers for once!” but it wasn’t to be. At least I had the incredible good fortune to sit at the same table with them, buy their books and be captivated by their personality and charm.
The guests went home with a smile, having combined fun with a gesture of solidarity. Compliments to Stefania and Valeria, we are already looking forward to the fifth edition of #natalecongliautori!
