In the heart of Brera, among the streets steeped in Milanese history and charm, one venue has welcomed guests with the warmth of home for over 40 years: La Libera.

Founded in 1980 as a pub serving food by close friends Italo Menca and Gino Narducci (united by a shared passion for good food, jazz and fine drinks) the venue has established itself as a landmark for three generations of Milanese locals and visitors. In the ’80s, as foreign beers grew in popularity across Italy, La Libera became so successful that it was a favourite spot for lovers of Belgian and French labels, also thanks to a partnership with Civitelli, a pioneer of beer importing in Milan.

Over time, food took centre stage, transforming the venue into an elegant blend of trattoria milanese and music pub. Italo’s salon-loving, Dandy spirit is mirrored in the interiors, with walls clad in sophisticated green boiserie, shelves lined with bottles and steins from across the globe, and photographs charting Italo and Gino’s adventures between Montecarlo, Londra, New York and Caraibi.

The kitchen’s philosophy shines through in dishes celebrating traditional Lombard meat and fish specialities. The Risotto al salto, the Cotoletta alla milanese and the Rognoncino di vitello alle mele e calvados are menu staples, alongside other Italian favourites such as Spaghetti cacio e pepe al profumo di limone, Pici al pesto di pistacchio e pomodori essiccati, Polpo affogato con timballo di polenta and Baccalà morro con schiacciata di patate dolci e polvere di capperi.

Today, La Libera preserves its distinct identity, drawing Milanese regulars, tourists and showbiz figures alike. Open only in the evening, it remains an authentic haven for anyone seeking good food and genuine company – something Italo and Gino never fail to deliver from behind the counter, welcoming guests with a smile, a friendly chat and a glass of beer.
