Stelvio

The comeback of mondeghili and sciatt in Milan

In a gastronomic landscape more and more devoted to fusion and international kitchen, finding a place where to enjoy the true DNA of Lombardy’s cuisine becomes harder every day. But when you are on the verge of quitting, Stelvio opens right across the street, a place where the protagonists are the recipes of the Northern tradition to taste in a modernly designed space, full of creative details (like the tattoo-like art that decorates the walls), in the vivacious Isola area, which is a symbol of this state of mind, a neighborhood where tradition and modernity live toe-to-toe, the old Milanese walkway houses with the new metropolitan skyscrapers.

At the same time these features are reflected in the constitutive elements of the restaurant: a contemporary interior (with highly Instagrammable details) and a menu which is a comeback of the traditional recipes to discover again Lombardy cuisine and its roots. Stelvio’s story is different from other similar paths.

Stelvio’s adventure starts in Toronto, Canada, where the owners made successfully known the Lombardy gastronomy with mondeghili, casoncelli and ossobuco, they then came back to their country and created their idea of a restaurant under the Madonnina.

Stelvio plays with tradition, proposing dishes that start from specialties and end on modern results with ludic overtones, like the polenta burger with sausage and casera, where the bread buns are substitued with polenta and fried polenta takes the place of the french fries. The very much Milanese saffron risotto with ossobuco is unmissable, or the sciatt from Valtellina or the pumpkin tortellini with amaretti that tell about the tradition of Mantua.

The bet is to go back to the origins, with a fresh touch that can speak to today’s public, always starting from the selection of the product: seasonal and of high-quality. An ideal place to have a lunch or a friends’ dinner, in a minimalistic space: the lights hanging from the ceiling will surely be liked by ligth-design lover and the leather sofas will seduce those who love to find domestic details even when they’re not at home.

Stelvio is perfect for those who look for a substantial meal, where the strong, full-bodied and intense flavors tell a story, the story of our tradition.

We can't. That's why every week we share the best experiences milan has to offer.
