Trattoria Ponte Vecchio

History, tradition, taste

The Ponte Vecchio in Florence is a historical site and one of the most famous past landscapes in the world. Every place that stands nearby has learned to take advantage of the enormous fortune of having such an illustrious neighbor. The Trattoria Ponte Vecchio is one of these places, with the only difference that it does not need panoramic views to surprise its customers: the only thing you will want to look at, here, are the dishes in front of you.

The interiors of the restaurant are based on a traditional style but without the usual rustic frills that show off the other restaurants in the city. One of the rooms has the shades of white and blue, which balance the warm tones of the terracotta floor, the other is instead dominated by the more classic wooden elements. Few, essential decorations, many bottles of wine and a mural depicting the panorama of the city. Nothing else is needed to welcome guests.

Start by ordering the appetizers. Mixed Tuscan crostini, bruschetta and a zucchini and pumpkin flower flan, all washed down with a good Tuscan red. Continue with the first courses: the truffle cutters of San Miniato are a must, as are the ribollita, pici and pappardelle and the flakes stuffed with pecorino and pears with robiola cream and truffle. But don’t underestimate the chef’s creamy risottos: you won’t regret it.

For the second order the fish of the day, always very fresh, or the meat specialties like the peposo, the rabbit stuffed with plum sauce, the wild boar with polenta or the traditional Florentine steak. Dishes of this kind require a fine wine, which manages to match its flavor. A Brunello di Montalcino will serve the need, wrapping the flavors of beef and game with its aromatic notes.

Don’t underestimate the dessert, whose list deserves to be tasted in full, from top to bottom. Wild berry cheesecake, sacher cake, millefeuille with chantilly and chocolate, crème brûlée and, finally, a treat for all lovers of true Tuscan flavors: cantucci and vin santo to end the meal in style.

Both for its cuisine and for its position, the Trattoria Ponte Vecchio is a destination that is difficult not to notice and is completely worthy of a visit. Whether it’s for a lunch or dinner, it doesn’t matter, the only thing that really matters is crossing the door armed with a healthy appetite. Everything else will fall into place.

We can't. That's why every week we share the best experiences florence has to offer.
