Where to have breakfast in Milan

Once a rushed affair grabbed on the move, breakfast in Milan has become a proper weekend ritual, complete with artisan croissants, Nordic-inspired pastries and specialty coffee poured with meticulous care, all served in places that seem designed expressly for photographs (and often are). We have taken on the hard task of curating a list of bakeries and coffee shops where top-tier bakes, made from fine flours by skilled hands, sit alongside coffees sourced and brewed with quality, sustainability and respect for the growers in mind. Where should you head for breakfast in Milan? Which are those spots where you can enjoy this relaxed, affordable morning ritual? Here is the FLAWLESS guide. Ready? Let’s go!

Loste Cafe’

Via Francesco Guicciardini, 3

Loste Café, breakfast spot in Milan

CallDirections

Loste Caffè, in the Risorgimento neighbourhood, opened in 2021 and quickly became a go-to for Milan’s breakfast lovers. Its minimalist design, made of wood and natural light, reflects the northern European training of its two founders. Sourcing top-quality ingredients is central: each one is chosen to elevate the Italian café experience while keeping an approachable, international and contemporary feel. Breakfast here smells of butter, sugar and spice: highlights include the 100% Danish-style cinnamon roll and the Kev biscuit filled with cream and jam. The specialty coffee menu is extensive: espresso, filter, cortado and flat white, all made with single-origin beans. Following the success of the first venue, a second address opened in 2024 on via Varesina, featuring a large bakery lab and an outdoor garden.

GluFree Bakery

Via Curtatone, 6

Glufree Bakery, breakfast spot in Milan

CallDirections

They say love moves mountains, but it turns out it can work wonders with flour and yeast too. Glufree Bakery was born just like that: a love story that prompted a young Sicilian to turn a gluten-free necessity into an ambitious bakery project for his partner (and the whole of Milan). In this modern bakery a short walk from Porta Romana, the breakfast ritual leaves all compromise behind in favour of pure indulgence. Here, the croissants are crisp and generous, whether plain, pistachio or custard-filled, alongside fruit tartlets, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cakes and pastries made with equal care for look and taste. But the real spark comes from its island roots: with impeccable cassate and cannoli, breakfast at Glufree is an inclusive experience that satisfies coeliacs and non-coeliacs alike, in a warm setting where artisan quality is the one staple that never falters. For savoury cravings, the counter is packed: Sicilian arancini, panzerotti, soft focaccia, rotating quiches and gourmet pizzette designed around seasonal produce and creative pairings. Glufree is the ideal spot to start the morning on the right foot and with an indulgent smile.

Onest

Via Gerolamo Turroni, 2

Onest, breakfast spot in Milan

CallDirections

With a name playing on ‘nest’ and ‘onesto’ (honest), Onest is a statement of intent: an urban retreat where slowing down and feeling at home is truly possible. In the Piazzale Susa area, it welcomes guests with an intimate, bohemian atmosphere, peacock-blue walls and a hidden garden that feels instantly like a holiday. Here, breakfast is a daily treat, a ritual to savour unhurried: pain au chocolat, tonka bean veneziane, bread with butter and jam, cinnamon buns, eggs, savoury croissants and plenty of other thoughtful delights made according to principles of seasonality, traceability and sustainability. Everything is, naturally, paired with specialty coffee in various forms, from classic espresso to filter and flat white, alongside caffeine-free options such as matcha latte and chai latte. A sanctuary for anyone who values a slow morning.

Nowhere Cafe

Via Vetere, 14

Nowhere Cafe, breakfast spot in Milan

Directions

In the heart of the Ticinese neighbourhood, with a small outdoor terrace overlooking greenery, Nowhere is a welcoming haven with an international feel, where the aroma of freshly ground coffee blends with cinnamon and warm pastries straight from the oven. Coffee here is taken seriously: micro-roasting, single origins only, no sugar and various brewing methods to bring out every nuance. It is a daily ritual paired with a menu that looks far afield, blending Anglo-Saxon influences with French touches: from cinnamon and cardamom buns to blondies, vegan banana bread, Bordeaux cannelés and cheesecakes, alongside mouth-watering savoury options like their standout avocado toast.

Fola’

Via Luigi Varanini, 12

Fola', breakfast spot in Milan
CallDirections

In the heart of NoLo, Fòla recalls neighbourhood shops of the past, where people greet each other by name and pause to chat with whoever is behind the counter. Breakfast here is inclusive and sustainable, with artisan bakes also made for those with food intolerances or on plant-based diets: homemade croissants, pain au chocolat, swirled pastries, savoury Danish pastries and cakes without lactose, eggs or wheat. The highlight is the baulus, laminated pastry filled with almond frangipane, muscovado sugar, raisins and pineapple. Everything pairs with excellent coffee, from flat whites to single-origin cold brew, for a morning bite that is wholesome, ethical and never dull.

Tone Milano – Bread Lab

Via Donatello, 22

Tone Milano (Bread Lab)
@about_forte

CallDirections

At Tone, breakfast is a daily ritual built on three tangible pillars: quality, skill and sustainability. It all begins with a careful selection of ingredients, often from small producers, and the choice of wholemeal flours, worked slowly with care. The result? Wholesome bread and pastries, changing with the seasons and telling stories from across the globe: challah, babka, Gâteau de Savoie, bombole, cardamom buns… each item is a discovery. Coffee receives equal dedication: specialty coffee served as espresso or filter, ideal alongside an authentically international bakery. The space is uncluttered, warm and well conceived, with a simple, functional aesthetic.

Pavé

Via Felice Casati, 27

Pavé, breakfast spot in Milan

CallDirections

In the heart of Porta Venezia, Pavé is easy to spot: the queue outside says it all. For over ten years it has been a Milanese breakfast cornerstone, with a counter showing off genuine baked masterpieces that change with the seasons and creative whim, though classics remain untouchable, such as La Rossa with raspberries, the coffee-flavoured Treccia or the pain au chocolat. There is also a delicious vegan option and savoury snacks, plus the panettone that Christmas devotees can find here year-round. The coffee measures up: 100% Arabica espresso, single origins, batch brew, cold brew and spiced chai latte. A true institution for starting the morning well, now also present with a second outpost on Via della Commenda and an equally celebrated gelateria.

Le Polveri | Panificio Diurno

Via Vespri Siciliani, 16

Le Polveri (Panificio Diurno), breakfast spot in Milan

Directions
Just around the corner from Piazza Napoli, Le Polveri is a fragrant sanctuary away from the city bustle. Originally founded as a micro-bakery in Sant’Ambrogio by Aurora Zancanaro, it expanded a few years ago with Panificio Diurno on Via Vespri: a bakery with a café and around 20 covers, created for those who wish to slow down and enjoy every bite. Breakfasts carry the scent of northern Europe and sourdough: soft brioche buns, cardamom or orange buns, tuppi and sweet or savoury pastries. The bread, the undisputed star, can be taken away: baguettes, ciabatta and country loaves. And then there is the specialty coffee, crafted with passion and served with the unhurried pace it deserves.

Pan Milano

Via Leopoldo Cicognara, 19

Pan Milano

CallDirections

PAN is a Japanese bakery in the Dateo area, created by the seasoned duo Yoji Tokuyoshi and Alice Yamada, the minds behind Katsusanderia. The star here is shokupan, soft and subtly sweet Japanese milk bread, served toasted or paired with sweet and savoury toppings. Other favourites flying off the counter include soft-boiled eggs with ham and Comté, savoury croissants, French toast, cinnamon rolls, plain croissants and pain au chocolat. All of this comes paired with specialty coffee by Cafezal, available as espresso or filter, for a morning kick of quality and flavour. The relaxed mood and clean lines in pistachio tones make PAN the perfect address for an unhurried, refined breakfast, in true Japanese style.

The Coffee

Via Vespri Siciliani, 16

The Coffee, breakfast spot in Milan

Directions

Having arrived in Milan a few months ago, after more than 300 openings worldwide, The Coffee brings a fresh morning concept to Viale Piave: a minimalist aesthetic inspired by Japan, tablet ordering and house-roasted specialty beans. Choose from different origins, sit leisurely at one of the few small tables or take it to go. The drinks range from espresso, cold brew, chai and matcha latte to signatures such as the Vanilla Latte and Flat Caramel. Alongside, a bakery counter offers croissants, pain au chocolat, banana bread and cookies. Here the coffee is precise, the service swift yet calm, and the atmosphere tailored for anyone seeking quality without fuss. A global format that fits contemporary Milan effortlessly.
