The most awaited event of the spring season is back: Design Week has officially begun and Milan is ready more than ever to welcome it back. After winning the award for Best City of Italy for quality of life 2018 and Best city 2019, the Lombard capital is at the center of world attention and is experiencing an important phenomenon of change and evolution, so much to be chosen by foreign designers and Italians as a reference point.
With more than 205,000 square meters of exhibition space and more than 2,350 exhibitors, the 58th edition of the Salone del Mobile recalls the excellence of world design and is preparing once again to play the role as engine of the city. The interior and exterior design that the event wants to tell sees the boundaries between living and working spaces increasingly blurred, in a perspective of enrichment for both dimensions. Historical brands retain a crucial value for the continuity of discipline while young people are given particular attention to enhance their vital creativity.
What makes this edition of the Show particularly special is the important anniversary that will be celebrated during the busiest week of the year: in 2019, in fact, the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, one of the most noted characters in the history of the city, giving it in just twenty years of permanence an artistic and cultural heritage of extraordinary value. Leonardo inspired the key word of the 58th edition: ingenuity. A concept with deep Latin roots that appeals to curiosity, risk, cultural vivacity and the desire for innovation. All characteristics handed down over the centuries and still today are a source of inspiration for designers, architects and artists from all over the world.
It is no coincidence that the two most important installations of the event are a tribute precisely to the genius of Leonardo.
AQUA. LA VISIONE DI LEONARDO
Via S. Marco, Conca dell’Incoronata
An immersive installation in the Conca dell’Incoronata (Brera area) realized by Balich Worldwide Shows for Salone del Mobile where an architectural graft will be created to reproduce a large body of water. Here an LED screen will become a window for the Milan of the future and, beneath this structure, a Wunderkammer will let visitors experience the beauty and energy of water. Wrapping them in image and sound thanks to more advanced technology. Leonardo’s genius will return to life in the heart of Milan.
DE-SIGNO: LA CULTURA DEL DESIGN ITALIANO PRIMA E DOPO LEONARDO

An exhibition installation dedicated to the languages of cinema and theater set design. A show of images and music will tell the story of Leonardo and the Renaissance workshops, putting them in relation to contemporary design companies. An exaltation of Italian culture and beauty that will involve the public by touching the strings of emotion.
The Salone, as we know, owes much of its success to the complementary Fuorisalone. Forty years after the birth of the famous Italian collective Memphis, Matteo Thun selects and exhibits his favorite pieces of the postmodern current. Three rooms dedicated to the genius of Ettore Sottsass, the fourth presents the idea of Beatrice Bonzanigo from an eco-friendly house and the fifth shows limited edition ceramics signed by Matteo Thun.
WOOD-SKIN – PLAYGROUND

WOOD-SKIN srl, already known in the city for its permanents, presents PLAYGROUND, an urban installation that celebrates the street as a connective tissue and a playground. The Corso Garibaldi sidewalk becomes three-dimensional and folds along a series of “digital hinges” just like an origami.

The historic Palazzo Cusani in via Brera 15 will host Il Giardino di St-Germain e L’Albero-Fiore. A monumental installation accompanied by a design bar, the result of collaboration between the Franco-Italian designer Marc Ange, based in Los Angeles, and St-Germain, the artisanal French liqueur prepared with a thousand fresh elder flowers for each bottle. The project is the centerpiece of Marc Ange’s exhibition entitled “An Extraordinary World” and will give visitors a complete sensory experience.

The Caracol design studio, an expert in digital fabrication and 3D printing for large volumes, sets up an ambitious and unique project of its kind: “The 3D Bar”, the first bar completely 3D printed by an anthropomorphic robotic system. Here visitors can enjoy a drink immersed in an almost surreal setting, thanks to the creation of the organic forms of the bar through a generative design process. The aim is to testify that the union of design and technology with a view to environmental sustainability can give surprising results also from an aesthetic point of view.

The well-known brand of soft cases and accessories Pijama collaborates with the graphic studio La Tigre for a home decor project: the hypnotic pillow. The all-female and under-35 designer duo Flatwig Studio presents Alcova Sassetti “Ondula” at the space. A collection of furnishing accessories made from the corrugated slab commonly used in the roofing industry. Designed for retail spaces and domestic environments, the collection consists of two furnishings: a clothes hanger and a coffee table where ondulina is the focus.

At the historic Palazzo Isimbardi, Cos presents Conifera, an architectural installation created with 3D printing using renewable materials, conceived by the French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani and his London studio. The installation, designed and created digitally, is the result of the interlocking of seven hundred bio-modular bricks, generated by a 3D printer mixing wood and bio-plastic. The structure will wind from the courtyard to the adjacent garden of Palazzo Isimbardi.

The second edition of “Architects MEET People” is back, the project that involves Italian architectural firms and invites them to photograph unusual and original characters that wander around the Fuorisalone and are in line with the mood of the studio. Participants will be equipped with a Polaroid Pop (an Instant Digital Camera) with a roll of ten films. Each will have a whole day at his disposal to observe and choose the faces to be immortalized. The selection of the best shots will be displayed at the H2Otto Space. New this year is the partnership with BROMPTON JUNCTION MILANO (Official Flagship Store Italy) which offers a series of bikes to easily enjoy the Fuorisalone 2019, encouraging the concept of “green mobility”.

Ro Plastic – Master’s Pieces is the exhibition curated by Rossana Orlandi with unique and unpublished works created exclusively for the project. The material chosen is the plastic recycled by artists, designers and architects of world renown with the aim of demonstrating that the use and conscious reuse can be part of the solution to a concrete and actual problem. Visitors will be able to admire the jacquard tapestry worked from the special frames of the “Fabbrica Lenta Bonotto” with the green fabric by definition: the Bonotto Gardening, a yarn in recycled polyester.

The MUDEC is the place chosen by Alessi to present its new moka with an exhibition entitled “Moka Alessi. Design & Re-Design. From Richard Sapper (1979) to David Chipperfield (2019) “. The exhibition itinerary also includes an installation and a film made by Virgilio Villoresi in which dreams and imagination merge to give rise to a fairytale narrative developed around the new Chipperfield Moka. The museum bistro will become a MOKERIA for the entire Design Week. A pop bar with bright colors (yellow and cyan) where you can enjoy mocha coffee in company and not in the most usual domestic dimension.

The Hotel Magna Pars Suites is the setting that hosts DBOX, the project that boasts the artistic direction of Fabio Novembre. IQOS WORLD REVEALED BY ALEX CHINNECK – OPIFICIO 31

At Opificio 31 it will be possible to visit an environmental installation with a suggestive power created by the famous British artist Alex Chinneck. It is a site-specific environmental intervention that shows the architecture of the front buildings at the entrance of the former manufacturing area as the protagonist. - The exhibition ‘UN-LEARN / RE-LEARN’ which questions the best observation point to look to the future and questions the patterns of the present. A “non-instructive” path with installations, practices and experiences designed by Italo Rota with Marco Cadioli, Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, Stefano Mirti and Super – Scuola Superiore d’Arte Applicate of the Sforzesco Castle, Andrea de Chirico and Music Innovation Hub.
- VENTURA FUTURE E IL DESIGN CONFESSION: Ventura Future offers an overview of the work of emerging designers, international academies, innovative brands. In the “Design Confession” (a veritable confessional dedicated to the discipline) aspiring designers and industry gurus will exchange unspeakable questions and secrets of the trade.
- OPEN SOUND SESSION DESIGN WEEK: to animate the Design Week evening, a musical program in line with the themes of the exhibition will include a double dancefloor with DJ sets in the BASE courtyard and a large sound system within the industrial spaces.
#LOVDESIGN – L’OV MILANO SOLARI

L’Ov Milan, the realm designed for the true Italian foodlovers mixed with American overseas food, wants to talk about itself in an unusual way and does it in the Via Andrea Solari headquarters with #lovedesign, a project born in collaboration with Paola Buzzini, founder of Soup Opera. For this edition of the Salone del Mobile, the restaurant has decided to use design to talk about comfort food of excellence, the egg – which has always been the star of the brand’s menu – with an exhibition organized in collaboration with Canon. The walls of the room will host a selection of design pieces inspired by the egg and you can also taste a special dish.

There are new nine dishes to try during Design Week only by reservation in the 28 Posti bistro.

Tenoha, the Japanese-inspired concept store, will host an exclusive installation by Nendo, the well-known Japanese design studio headed by Oki Sato, together with Daikin – a global leader in air conditioning systems. The two giants will present breeze of light, an exhibition of lights and shadows inspired by the concept of “air”, an essential element for human life, and which is also part of Daikin’s core business.

The DOS project, Design Open ‘Spaces, was created by the Re.rurban and Emilio Lonardo studios in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan and sponsored by Milan Polytechnic, with the Dazio Art Cafè headquarters. Seven spaces located in six different areas “Re-known” return to the city with a new look and new functions, including renovations, design exhibitions and installations. The international lighting design studio presents an installation created for Design Week 2019 in collaboration with the American designer John Hogan. The theme is the exploration of glass and its interaction with light.

Studio Volker Haug represents Australia during the “Local Design” exhibition organized for this Design Week. The inspiration for the lights comes from the shape of the pyramid and its reinterpretations.

DRY MILANO #AFTERMIDNIGHT
To round off the intense design days counted on Dry, it presents #aftermidnight at its headquarters in Brera, Via Solferino. An initiative aimed at all those who, even late at night, are looking for a snack, perhaps accompanied by a good cocktail. A special menu available from Tuesday to Sunday from midnight to one, where you will find simple but tasty dishes and cocktails from the new drink list signed by Federico Volpe.
SPAZIO TENCITT
If you want a special location, far from the confusion of the Milanese nightlife and located at the same time in the most intimate heart of the city, Spazio Tencitt is the one for you. The walls of this place, with exposed brick and barrel vault, recall the history of Milan and seem to preserve the most distant secrets of the city. A suggestive event space located below the Piedmontese winery where you can organize a private event or an unforgettable dinner thanks to the possibility of setting up a table that can accommodate up to 40 people. CAFFÈ CONCERTO CUCCHI
An example of design at the service of tradition, Caffè Concerto Cucchi is the reinterpretation of the historic pastry shop in Corso Genova 1 by designer Cristina Celestino. A project conceived as a creative exchange between past and present projected towards the future. The interiors, the dehors and the external façade of the premises are involved but also the activities inside it: from the uniforms of the staff to the design of desserts and confections. The month of April from Cucchi will be an authentic dip in the most glorious past of the city.
AMOR
The Alajmo Group in collaboration with Philippe Starck, announces the opening of AMOR at 10 Corso Como. Scheduled for Wednesday April 10th at 8:00am. The fast-casual venue will cater both to the hectic metropolitan tribe and lovers of good food. The menu is based on the simplicity and genuinity of ingredients, focusing on the patented steam pizza by Massimiliano Alajmo. This is the ideal place for a quick break that is healthy and rewarding.
