Caffè Florian
Piazza San Marco, 57

Opened in Piazza San Marco in 1720, Caffè Florian is one of the oldest cafés in the world. With rooms decorated and frescoed in Rococo Revival style, it feels timeless and ideal for an atmospheric breakfast. Served on silver trays, the Casanova breakfast menu offers an international spread of croissants, fresh fruit salad and filled focaccine. Alternatively, choose from countless sweet and savoury options: traditional dry pastries, classic English scones and savoury croissants. The rich hot chocolate and exclusive Florian tea blends come highly recommended.
Gran Caffè Quadri
Piazza San Marco, 121

Quadri, standing in Piazza San Marco since 1775, is one of Venice’s historic cafés and has been run by the Alajmo brothers since 2011. Their creative culinary approach extends to breakfast. Alongside a continental option, two menus are named after the brothers, Max and Raf. The first reimagines a classic Italian breakfast with croissants, bread, butter and hazelnut spread. The second is an Italian take on a full English, substituting bacon with Asiago cheese and culaccia di Parma. A true morning celebration in pure Italian style.
Gran Caffè Lavena
Piazza San Marco, 133/134

This historic café, near the Torre dell’Orologio in Piazza San Marco, was Richard Wagner’s favourite spot. Perhaps because in the late 19th century, Carlo Lavena drew inspiration from Viennese coffeehouses? Today it remains the ideal setting for an elegant breakfast, sipping tea alongside sweet or savoury brioches, cakes and house-made pastries. The thick hot chocolate remains an unbeatable highlight.
AMO
San Marco, 5556

Ideal for breakfast inside the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, Amo sits in the central courtyard of a striking 13th-century building restored by Rem Koolhaas. This café – part of the Alajmo group – features contemporary interiors by Philippe Starck. In typical Alajmo style, the baking blends tradition and innovation, using extra virgin olive oil as the primary fat for creations that are also well suited to a vegan breakfast.
Pasticceria Tonolo
Calle San Pantalon, 3764

If you want a traditional Venetian breakfast and have a sweet tooth, Pasticceria Tonolo is unmissable. Open since 1953 in Dorsoduro, it has remained strictly family-run ever since. It is the perfect spot for a quick coffee and pastry at the counter, tasting Venetian classics such as bussolà biscuits from Burano or, during Carnival, the famous ‘fritole’ filled with raisins or pastry cream.
Harry’s Bar
Calle Vallaresso, 1323

Just off Piazza San Marco, Harry’s Bar is an essential stop. Once a gathering place for world-famous artists and writers, it was declared a national landmark in 2001 for its historical significance. Renowned for its dishes and legendary cocktails, Harry’s Bar also serves an excellent breakfast. It is a stylish way to begin the day, pairing an espresso with freshly baked cakes of the day.
Pasticceria Ballarin
Calle San Crisostomo, 5794

If you love pastries and cannot start the day without a croissant or sweet bake, Pasticceria Ballarin is for you. Close to Rialto, this welcoming spot features dark wood furnishings and a friendly neighbourhood feel. Specialities include bignè, fresh fruit tarts and flaky puff pastries. Take a look at the counter to start your morning; choosing just one will not be easy.
Torrefazione Cannaregio
Fondamenta dei Ormesini, 2804

For a steaming cup of coffee to kickstart the day, head to Torrefazione Cannaregio in the sestiere of the same name. Dating back almost a century, it is the only coffee roaster in central Venice and serves a vast array of blends sourced from the world’s finest coffee regions. The preparation options are just as varied, from shaken cappuccinos to flavoured coffees. Alongside coffee, tea and herbal infusions, you will find brioches, fritole and a tempting selection of cakes.
Pasticceria dal Mas
Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, 150

Historic Pasticceria Dal Mas is ideal for traditional pastries and chocolate lovers. Close to Santa Lucia station, it is famous for its cakes and traditional local treats such as pan del Doge, a sweet loaf with dried fruit, and torta San Marco, layered with sponge cake and cream. The adjacent chocolate shop serves pralines, cakes and ganaches alongside a colourful selection of macarons.
Pasticceria Nobile
Cannaregio, 1818

In Cannaregio, Pasticceria Nobile is the go-to destination for breakfast at the counter, pairing an espresso or creamy cappuccino with sweet and savoury specialities. Generously filled croissants, apple tartlets and raisin brioches lead an enticing selection alongside traditional Venetian pastries, such as local biscuits and pinza, a rustic maize-flour cake. Freshly baked mini pizzette, available throughout the day, are a standout savoury option.
