If you really want to find the true Milan, the one hidden from most, there’s nothing better than losing yourself in the tiny streets surrounding Sant’Ambrogio, so tight you can hardly fit your car and so full of tiny artisan shops that you’ll find the real flavors, from long ago. There’s Via Novati 2, with the upholsterer who works in the internal courtyard and the hardware store around the corner that sells everything. There’s the Morgan, a bar always packed with young Milanese, and then there’s Via Caminadella, with Caminadella Dolci obviously.
The people in the area well know number 23. Yeah, because you could totally pass by and miss the tiny sign on the intercom. Ring it. Open the little door and go through the green courtyard. Let the smells guide you. They will lead you directly to the entrance of this little jewel of taste and flavors: you have arrived at Caminadella Dolci.
The environment was perfectly studied to create a hidden corner of comfort. There’s the counter, the kitchen within sight from the entrance and the little hall that opens onto the courtyard, furnished with tables and chairs, perfect for reading a book or your laptop and taking a minute to unwind in peace and quiet. Then there’s the cabinet so full of jams that it’s hard to choose where to start, the cookbooks to flip through, and then there they are, the cakes!
Our all time favorite is her, the house special: Bread and Chocolate Cake. The owners, Elena and Daniela, say they found the recipe in an old book of their grandmother and we believe them!
The flavors are so authentic and true to what you would expect from a homemade kitchen and the natural ingredients only make them more intense, yet always delicate. The laboratory takes orders, whether for sweet or savory, so if you’ve got an important dinner and you don’t want to overdo it, surprise your guests with something made to order. All you need to do is place your order just a few days ahead of time and you can pass for amateur pastry chef!
